Make Your Own Shaker Cabinet Doors

Shaker cabinet doors are a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms due to their simple, clean lines and versatility. They can be painted or stained to match any décor, and they are relatively easy to make yourself. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make your own shaker cabinet doors:

Materials You'll Need:

  • 1x6 pine boards (or other type of wood)
  • 3/4-inch plywood
  • Wood glue
  • 1-1/4-inch wood screws
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • 1/4-inch drill bit
  • Countersink bit
  • Clamps
  • Sander
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Cut the rails and stiles

The rails are the horizontal pieces of the door frame, and the stiles are the vertical pieces. For a standard 15-inch wide door, you will need to cut two rails that are 15 inches long and two stiles that are 24 inches long. If you are making a wider door, adjust the lengths of the rails and stiles accordingly.

Step 2: Cut the plywood panel

The plywood panel will be the center of the door. For a standard 15-inch wide door, you will need to cut a piece of plywood that is 14-3/4 inches wide and 23-3/4 inches tall. If you are making a wider door, adjust the size of the plywood panel accordingly.

Step 3: Assemble the door frame

Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the inside edges of the stiles. Place the rails on top of the stiles, flush with the edges. Clamp the frame together and drill two 1-1/4-inch wood screws through the stiles into each rail. Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood.

Step 4: Attach the plywood panel

Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the inside of the door frame. Place the plywood panel on top of the frame, flush with the edges. Clamp the panel in place and drill two 2-inch wood screws through the frame into each corner of the panel. Countersink the screws so that they are flush with the surface of the wood.

Step 5: Sand and finish the door

Sand the door smooth using a fine-grit sandpaper. If you are painting the door, apply a primer and two coats of paint. If you are staining the door, apply a pre-stain conditioner and then apply two coats of stain. Allow the door to dry completely before hanging it.

Congratulations! You have now made your own shaker cabinet doors. With a little bit of time and effort, you can create beautiful and custom cabinet doors that will add style and functionality to your home.
