How to Replace a Medicine Cabinet Mirror Door
A cracked or broken medicine cabinet mirror door can be a safety hazard and an eyesore. Replacing the door is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- New medicine cabinet mirror door
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver or putty knife
- Measuring tape
- Level (optional)
- Silicone caulk (optional)
Measuring the Door
Before you purchase a new mirror door, you'll need to measure the opening of your medicine cabinet. Use a measuring tape to measure the width and height of the opening. Make sure to measure both the inside and outside of the frame to ensure a snug fit.
Removing the Old Door
Once you have your new door, it's time to remove the old one. Open the medicine cabinet door and locate the screws holding the door in place. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws.
Once the screws are removed, carefully lift the door straight up and out of the frame. Be careful not to drop the door or bang it against anything.
Installing the New Door
Place the new door into the frame and align it with the holes for the screws. Use a level to make sure the door is level before securing it.
Insert the screws into the holes and tighten them with a Phillips head screwdriver. Do not overtighten the screws or you could crack the door.
Applying Caulk (Optional)
For a more professional and watertight finish, you can apply a bead of silicone caulk around the edges of the new door. Use a caulk gun to apply a thin bead of caulk and smooth it out with your finger or a caulk tool.
Closing the Door
Once the caulk has dried, close the door and enjoy your new, functional medicine cabinet mirror door.
Tips:
- Wear gloves when handling the mirror door to avoid getting fingerprints or scratches on it.
- If the medicine cabinet is recessed into the wall, you may need to remove the entire cabinet to replace the mirror door.
- If you have multiple medicine cabinets, it's a good idea to replace all of the mirror doors at the same time for a more uniform look.
- You can also hire a professional to replace your medicine cabinet mirror door if you are uncomfortable doing it yourself.
