How To Remove A Medicine Cabinet From The Wall
Removing a medicine cabinet from the wall may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple and can be completed in a few easy steps. With the right tools and a little bit of care, you can safely remove your medicine cabinet without damaging the wall or the cabinet itself.
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
Before you begin, gather the following tools:
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Stud finder
- Level
- Pry bar
- Hammer
- Safety glasses
Step 2: Turn Off the Power
For safety, turn off the power to the bathroom before you begin. This will prevent any electrical accidents from occurring.
Step 3: Remove the Screws
Locate the screws that are holding the medicine cabinet to the wall. There will typically be two screws, one on each side of the cabinet. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws.
Step 4: Disconnect the Wires
If your medicine cabinet is wired for electricity, you will need to disconnect the wires before you can remove it. To do this, simply unscrew the wire nuts that are connecting the wires to the cabinet. Be careful not to touch the bare wires.
Step 5: Support the Cabinet
Once the screws and wires have been removed, carefully support the cabinet with one hand. This will prevent it from falling and breaking.
Step 6: Pry the Cabinet Loose
Use the pry bar to gently pry the cabinet away from the wall. Start at the bottom of the cabinet and work your way up. Be careful not to damage the wall or the cabinet.
Step 7: Remove the Cabinet
Once the cabinet is loose, carefully lift it off the wall. Be sure to hold onto the cabinet with both hands to prevent it from falling.
Step 8: Repair the Wall
If you damaged the wall while removing the cabinet, you will need to repair it before you can install a new cabinet. To do this, simply fill the holes with spackling paste and smooth it out with a putty knife. Once the spackling paste has dried, you can sand it smooth and paint over it.
Step 9: Install the New Cabinet
Once the wall has been repaired, you can install the new medicine cabinet. To do this, simply follow the instructions that came with the cabinet.
Tips
- Wear safety glasses when removing the cabinet to protect your eyes from flying debris.
- Be careful not to damage the wall or the cabinet when removing it.
- If you are not comfortable removing the cabinet yourself, you can hire a professional to do it for you.
