How to Install European Hinges for Kitchen Cabinets

European hinges, also known as concealed hinges, are a popular choice for kitchen cabinets due to their sleek and seamless appearance. They create a modern and professional look, leaving no visible hinges on the cabinet doors. Installing European hinges may seem daunting at first, but following these step-by-step instructions will guide you through the process.

Required Tools and Materials:

- Drill or power screwdriver - 35mm hinge hole saw (or Forstner bit) - Hinge installation template (optional) - Phillips head screwdriver - European hinges - Mounting plates - Screws

Step 1: Determine Hinge Placement

Mark the hinge locations along the cabinet door edge using a hinge installation template or by measuring 70mm from the top and bottom and 10mm in from the sides. The measurements may vary slightly depending on the hinge model.

Step 2: Drill Hinge Holes

Using a drill and the 35mm hinge hole saw, drill holes at the marked locations on the door edge. Drill perpendicularly to the door surface to ensure proper hinge alignment.

Step 3: Insert Hinges and Adjust Depth

Insert the hinge cup into the drilled hole and secure it with the provided screws. Use an Allen wrench or screwdriver to adjust the hinge depth by turning the adjustment screw at the bottom of the hinge cup. The depth should be set so that the cabinet door sits flush with the cabinet frame when closed.

Step 4: Install Mounting Plates

Position the mounting plates on the cabinet frame and mark their locations. Drill small pilot holes for the mounting screws and secure the plates.

Step 5: Attach Door and Adjust

Lift the cabinet door onto the hinge cups and insert the mounting plates into the hinge arm slots. Tighten the screws to secure the door. Check the alignment and make any necessary adjustments using the hinge adjustment screws. Adjust the vertical alignment (up/down) and horizontal alignment (in/out) to create a perfect fit.

Step 6: Install Soft-Close Mechanism (Optional)

If desired, some European hinges come with a soft-close mechanism. This feature allows the cabinet door to close gently and quietly. To install the soft-close mechanism, simply clip it onto the hinge arm and tighten the screws.

Additional Tips:

- Use a drill guide or hinge template to ensure accurate drilling and alignment. - Clamp the cabinet door securely in place before drilling the hinge holes. - Countersink the screws slightly below the surface for a clean finish. - Test the hinge operation before fully tightening the screws. - Wipe away any excess sawdust or debris to ensure smooth hinge movement. By following these steps accurately, you can successfully install European hinges on your kitchen cabinets, resulting in a sophisticated and functional upgrade.
